Founded by Dave Lopez, a tattoo artist with over 30 years of experience and a proud member of a multi-generational tattoo family rooted in New York City’s rich tattoo history.
Dave’s tattoo lineage began with his father, a pioneering artist who helped shape NYC’s tattoo scene since the 1970s. Building on this legacy, Dave has developed his own mastery through decades of tattooing and extensive time spent in Okinawa, Japan. Immersed in the culture and traditional Japanese tattoo art, he brings deep respect and authentic skill to every piece.

My Story
With over 32 years of tattooing experience, Dave Lopez carries forward a rich family legacy—he learned the craft directly from his father, Ron Lopez, a living legend in NYC tattooing since 1973. Specializing in traditional Japanese tattooing, Dave has spent the last 20 years traveling and tattooing extensively in Japan, most recently at One Shot Tattoo in Naha, Okinawa.
His philosophy deeply honors the time-honored Japanese methods, blending refined technique with cultural immersion. At Shisa Tattoo Studio, a private, appointment-only space in Maplewood, NJ, he offers a personal, relaxing experience where clients don’t just get inked—they connect with centuries of tradition and artistry.
Known for his kindness, generosity, and humility, Dave is a focused and respectful artist who works efficiently without sacrificing quality. Beyond tattooing, he paints traditional Japanese artwork, creates original flash sheets, and is a passionate art collector. He also continues to run and tattoo at his NYC shop, Ron & Dave’s Tattoo, established in 1998.
